I have read SEP's different series and enjoyed almost all of the books, and for the most part I have liked her writing. It had wit and sparkle, and the characters were snappy and grew on me quickly. I was disappointed this time because the writing was flat and it took her a long time for any of that sparkle to appear. A best-selling author shouldn't need so many pages to warm up, in my opinion. (Dance Away With Me was another slow starter.) The device used to set up the initial hostility was strained. What should have been a buildup of tension as notes and photos kept arriving and Olivia's premises were searched multiple times never really happened, as she shrugged off the break-ins more than once. I felt the most for her once we finally learned that she had lost her voice (i do love opera).Once the end was in sight and the pace picked up the going was better. The happy ending Epilogue almost made up for the clunkiness of the writing in the first chapters. Three stars for the unusual subject matter, the fact that the Diva wasn't really a diva, and the charming end. As a big SEP fan, I have to admit to being pretty disappointed in this latest book. When I got to the last page I concluded that SEP is sick and tired of writing about the Chicago Stars and had just phoned this one in. There was no chemistry between H/h and the dialogue lacked SEP’s usual snap and sparkle. And the story was disjointed and felt forced. Also, I found the early scene where Olivia gets drunk and attacks Thad to be very distasteful — it was unpleasant, unbelievable and painted the “heroine” in a hateful light. It took a while for me to get over that beginning and frankly, I still didn’t love her at the end. Thad was great (maybe too good!) and the dynamic between him and the Stars starting quarterback was lovely, and reminiscent of earlier Stars stories (Kevin Tucker and Cal Bonner, for example.) But it wasn’t enough to carry the story.I’m very sorry to be writing yet another negative review of a this author’s work: I am one of her fans and some of the books from her backlist are ones I have read and reread. “When Stars collide” just doesn’t live up to those earlier works; its not her worst (the one about the puppets and the last one are at the head of that particular list) but it is disappointing and forgettable.New SEP readers: I recommend you NOT start here but go to her earlier books (It Had to Be You, or Match Me if You Can, or Ain’t She Sweet or almost any of them) and not read this one until you’re firmly hooked on this usually awesome writer.
