You have to hear this!” I rushed to get the book to read this from p. 329: “Her breasts rose as bold as the Rockies…” I wasn't sure what to expect when I opened this book and read the first page, but I know it wasn't what author, Janet Skeslien Charles, gave me. I suppose I expected stories centered around the war and the Nazi occupation of Paris-stories of hidden children, fear and betrayal. There was some of that, but there was so much more!Odile Souchet wants more than anything to work at the American Library in Paris. Her father doesn't understand why, but her twin brother, Remy encourages her, and with his encouragement she ends up getting the job she so desired. We meet Odile as she is falling in love with handsome Paul, a police officer. Odile's idealistic, she's hard working and she loves her books. Through her we hear of the fear, the loss of friends, the families torn apart, but we also see hope, inspiration as she and others at the library work tirelessly not only to keep it open, but to deliver books to those no longer allowed within it's walls.In another time and place, Lily is a lonely girl searching for more-she befriends Odile at a time when she needs someone older, more mature and wiser to guide her through what is before her. Charles writes of Odile's time in Paris, and of Lily and Odiles friendship some 40 years later in Montana with a deft touch. She shares the worry and loneliness of both women touchingly. I joked with my husband that I cried four times during the first 50 pages, and during the next 250 I cried a dozen times more. Sometimes at the pain someone felt, other times at the hope and pride we see Odile and her friends have for their time together at the library.I think I love books almost as much as Odile does! They allow us glimpses into other times, other spaces and other lives-some we dream of, others we fear-but a good book touches you. It makes you want to go beyond the words on the page-maybe research a setting, or an era. This book did just that for me! It was truly beautifully written, and I can see myself enjoying this one again, and again in the coming years. I can't recommend this book enough-BUY IT! Buy it! And enjoy the pages as they fill you with wonder, as they make you cry, or smile. But Buy it!
